What is ICANN and why does it matter?

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the organization that oversees the global domain name system. Understanding the difference between registrar types is important:

• ICANN-accredited registrars are directly authorized and monitored by ICANN. They must follow strict rules and regulations.
• Resellers are intermediaries who sell domains through accredited registrars. ICANN has no direct oversight of their operations.

This distinction matters if you experience issues such as:

• Difficulty transferring your domain to another registrar
• Unauthorized locks or restrictions on your domain
• Disputes over domain ownership or access

If your registrar is ICANN-accredited, you can file a complaint directly with ICANN at https://www.icann.org/compliance/complaint. ICANN takes domain transfer issues seriously and can require registrars to comply with regulations.

For issues with resellers, you would need to contact their upstream ICANN-accredited registrar.

How can registrars add their prices to tldes.com?

Listing on tldes.com is free. Prices added to the site also appear on sites that use the tldes API.

Two requirements apply:

• ICANN accreditation. Only ICANN-accredited registrars are listed.
• Card or PayPal payments. Customers must be able to pay by Visa/Mastercard or PayPal.

To request a listing, send the following to :

• IANA ID of the registrar
• Payment methods available: Visa/Mastercard, PayPal, or both
• Transaction fees: whether customers pay anything on top of the prices shown in the price list when paying by card or PayPal, and if so, how much

Why ICANN accreditation is required: the homepage and primary focus of tldes.com is the .com comparison page, where the vast majority of user traffic goes. Since .com is an ICANN-regulated TLD, only ICANN-accredited registrars are relevant to this audience. The requirement ensures a consistent standard of trust and accountability for users who rely on tldes.com comparisons.

A few non-ICANN-accredited registrars can still be found on the site. They were added several years ago, before this policy was introduced, and do not reflect the current listing criteria.

How can registrars add their promo codes?

Promo codes from listed registrars are welcome. There are two ways to submit them:

• By email, to . For each code, include the TLDs it applies to, the discounted price, and the expiry date.
• Through a data source: a page on the registrar's website or an API endpoint that a script can read. The source is checked every hour, so new codes appear on tldes.com within an hour, and codes removed from the source disappear on the next check.

The only requirement for a data source is that it stays up to date and contains only currently active codes. Generating it automatically from the registrar's live promotion data is the easiest way to achieve this, but not the only one. A source that repeatedly contains expired or invalid codes may be removed.

How do I report an incorrect price?

Prices may not match the prices on the registrar's website for the following reasons:

• added ICANN fee
• added payment system commissions
• the script gets prices from the registrar API
• the registrar shows different prices in their price list and cart

Tip: If the registrar's price list differs from their cart price, contact the registrar. Once they fix their price list, tldes.com updates automatically.
